A chill is in the air, and as Hedgie trundles around the farm all his friends tell him of the winter-time fun he will miss as he hibernates: Icicles decorating the chicken coop! Lisa making snowmen! The pond turned to slippery ice!
It sounds so amazing that Hedgie decides to stay awake instead of going to his burrow. But then, a snowstorm starts. Luckily, Lisa finds him and brings him to her home, so Hedgie gets to see the wonders of winter from inside the cozy house.
Try these ideas with your children!
Infants and Toddlers: While reading the book, highlight the various farm animals. Point out different aspects of each animal. Try making the sound that they make!
Preschool: After reading the book, highlighting the various aspects of winter fun, discuss what children like to do outside, and what happened in the story. Then, have a snowball fight using paper wadded up to make balls.
School-age: While outside, have children look for evidence of animals on the playground or in your backyard.
For ALL children: Bring the snow inside! Try painting the snow with water colors, or using plastic animals as props for a fun sensory bin.
*The Blue Birds at our Clarkston campus explored paint and snow together! As a group, they went outside to get snow, and explored adding various colors, and eventually even textures when the children asked to add glitter!*
