Children’s Books About Back to School
Stories can help make a new school year feel a little more familiar.

Stories can help make a new school year feel a little more familiar.
At Heartfelt, we know that the start of a new school year can bring a lot of different emotions for children — excitement, curiosity, nervousness, and sometimes uncertainty. Whether a child is starting school for the very first time, moving into a new classroom, meeting a new teacher, or returning after summer break, books can help make the transition easier.
Stories give children a chance to see what school might look like before they experience it themselves. They can open conversations about new routines, friendships, separation from family, and the feelings that come with trying something new.
Below is a collection of children’s books we love for helping families prepare for a new school year with confidence, connection, and excitement.
Why Books Can Help Children Prepare for School
Children often feel more comfortable with change when they know what to expect. Reading about school together gives families a natural opportunity to talk about what the new school year might bring and answer questions along the way.
Books can help children:
-Become familiar with school routines and expectations
-Talk about excitement, nervousness, or other big feelings
-Prepare for separating from parents or caregivers
-Build confidence about entering a new classroom
-Learn about making friends and meeting new teachers
-Look forward to learning, playing, and exploring
-Feel reassured that their feelings about starting school are normal
There is no “perfect” way for a child to feel about going back to school. Some children may run through the classroom door on the first day, while others may need a little more time and reassurance. Reading together, talking about what to expect, and making space for all of those feelings can help children begin the year feeling safe, supported, and ready for what comes next.
